Configuration for Tera Term

*The procedure explained below is based on the premise thatTera Term is not installed on the system..

If you already have the UTF-8 Tera Term Pro and TTSSH2 etc. installed, please uninstall before following this procedure.
If you wish to back up the current setup before uninstalling, you are recommended to back up the following files in the Tera Term Pro folder (by default it is located in C:\Program Files\TTERMPRO), if any.

It is not recommended, however, to re-copy the file to the Tera Term Folder after installing.

  • teraterm.ini

  • ssh_known_hosts

Installation Procedure

  1. Access the URL below.


  2. When the page is displayed, check the “ダウンロード”in the mid section of the page.

  3. In the next page, click “teraterm-4.70.exe”(Assuming version is 4.70).

  4. You will be prompted to specify the location to save the file. Select an arbitrary location (e.g. C:\Temp).

  5. When download is completed, click “Run”.

  6. Setup will begin. Here, we will click “OK” with “Japanese”.

  7. Click “Next”.

  8. If you agree to the terms of the license agreement, select “Accept” and click “Next”.

  9. In the “Choose Destination Location” dialog, “C:\Program Files\teraterm” should be selected.
    Click “Next” to proceed.

  10. In the Select Components dialog, click “Next” with “Typical Installation” being selected.

  11. In the below dialog, click “Next” with “日本語”.

  12. In the Choose Program Group dialog, click “Next” to accept the default settings.

  13. In the “Select Additional Tasks” dialog, click “Next” to accept the default settings.

  14. In the Ready to Install dialog, check the information on the summary screen. Click “Install” to begin the installation.

  15. In the Setup Wizard Complete dialog, click “Finish” to exit the setup program.

Changing the Setup After Installation

We will change the default setup since there are many Japanese EUC hosts in the University.

  1. Launch the “Tera Term” icon created on the desktop.

  2. In the New Connection dialog, click “Cancel”.

  3. In the Tera Term window, select “Terminal” in the Setup menu.

  4. Change the character code selected in the “Kanji (Receive)” and “Kanji (Transmit)” dropdown list to “EUC” and click “OK”.

  5. In the Tera Term window, select “Save Setup” in the Setup menu.

  6. Click “Save” to save “TERATERM.INI”.
